There are currently three cane sugar refineries and one sugar beet processing plant in Canada: Lantic Inc. operates refineries in Montreal, Quebec and Vancouver, British Columbia. Redpath Sugar Ltd. has a refinery in Toronto, Ontario. Lantic also operates the country’s only sugar beet processing plant, located in Taber, Alberta.
Our sugarcane mill at La Baraque annually produces around 135,000 tonnes of Plantation White Sugar for our refinery, 400,000 tonnes of bagasse for our main cogeneration power plant, and 45,000 tonnes of molasses for our bioethanol distillery.
The sugar industry funds its own research, development and extension programs through the Philippine Sugar Research Institute Foundation, Inc. (PHILSURIN) with aim to develop high yielding cane varieties. The Philippine government, through SRA, provides the extension efforts in partnerships with the Mill District Development Councils (MDDC).
